An architect is hoping to build a 22-story tower in the heart of Paphos, Cyprus, but critics are opposed to the idea, the Cyprus Mail reports. Konstantinos Psomas, of Psomas Studio of Architecture, says his high rise would help give the city new character. City officials have long been opposed to high-rise buildings, only recently approving a 12-story tower. Previous buildings were limited to eight stories. One proponent of tall buildings, consulting engineer Andreas Chrysanthou, said building vertically makes sense, but not where Psomas wants to put his tower. Psomas, while acknowledging the difficult path he faces in gaining approval, remained upbeat about his proposal. He underlined the attributes of contemporary high-rise buildings, noting they free up space, allow for more greenspace and open views and create new landmarks. “People are still skeptical about having high rises in Paphos because of the history of mostly low buildings,” he said. “But every city has a history, and it evolves.”
