A recent investigation into the safety of NYC elevators revealed that the city is owed US$7.3 million in outstanding elevator-related fines, nearly half of which are for active violations. The Real Deal compiled the data from a seven-month investigation by Kathryn Brenzel and David Jeans and maintains an interactive map of many city buildings’ violation status. According to the investigation, at least 22 people have been killed in passenger elevators or shafts in the city since 2010. The NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) is charged with overseeing the 63,000 passenger elevators in the city. The DOB’s deputy commissioner, Timothy Hogan, says the accidents are “few and far between.” To comply with city law, the elevators are required to undergo annual inspections by the DOB’s elevator unit, which has 41 inspectors.
